That's the mantra of The Shop Brooklyn, and the two things they know best are motorcycles and barbeque. We call this cutting board The American and teamed up with our friends over there to bring it to you.
It's made from walnut, maple and cherry, and measures 10" x 15 1/4" and is 1 1/4" thick. It's finished with our blend of mineral oil, beeswax, anise oil and orange oil, and includes a mounting kit so you can hang it on the wall. Don't keep it in a drawer.
The real beauty of this cutting board is the scarph joint joining the field to stripes on the top half of the flag. Precision is key. You need the right tools and know-how, but you need your hands, too. Can't be done with just machines.
So worth it though.
Sort of like bringing an engine back to life or laying down some amazing paint. Only way to do it is to do it yourself. Or find the right person to help.
We create the bottom half, top stripes, and field separately.
Next we join the top stripes to the field with a scarph joint - that means we carefully cut the 45-degreee angles on each piece and then tightly glue them toegether end-to-end (you can never have too many clamps...).
Next we take a hand plane to the edges of both the completed top half and bottom stripes of the cutting board to ensure a tight joint that fits together perfectly (and then more glue and clamps).
After adding the handles and wall mount hole, we apply our finish, add the tags, and then the feet.
Well crafted.
We're sure it will serve you well for years to come.
