Read top to bottom, the thin and thick stripes represent the dots and dashes of Morse code. The board held up right is "SC" - dot-dot-dot, dash-dot-dash-dot - thin-thin-thin in maple, then thick-thin-thick-thin.
Visually, they're quite compelling, but there's a meaning. The pattern is not just stripes.
Like the Morse code that inspired these cutting boards, dinner should be all about sharing ideas and connecting people.
Morse code was the foundation for a technology that changed the nature of global communication. The last telegram ever was sent in July 2013, but the idea of Morse code will never be obsolete. We may be compelled to get new mobile phones every year, but you can use a telegraph, smoke signals, a flash light, or cutting board for Morse code.
It's timeless. Samuel F.B. Morse did his work on the telegraph while on the faculty at NYU, and is buried in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.
Two letters look great, we think, but we can do three if you like (although some letters are "large" in Morse code, and it may look a bit cramped - we'll work with you.)
If you select just one letter, we'll use thicker stripes for the dots and dashes so that it takes up a larger portion of the board.
This board is 1 1/4" thick and 16" wide (shown right), but the size is up to you. Our 20" wide and 1 1/2" boards are also pretty popular - they're a little wider with just a little more heft. Excellent proportions.
All of our cutting boards are wall mountable (hardware included - they're too pretty to put in a drawer, after all), and all cutting boards are tagged with our signature Gowanus Furniture Co. stamped tag.
We arrange the wood so that the grain tells a story. These are thoughtfully made by hand, and are a piece you want to look at. They will get a bit gouged up through use, though.
But that's ok.
Each board includes a complete resurfacing and refurbishing, to be used at a later date.
We stand by our products.
Use it, gouge it up, and when you want it to be cleaned up a bit, ship it back, we'll resurface it, and ship it back to you, free of charge.
Select your wood combination, 3 options for wood, shown right:
Note the letters for the monogram, in the order you want them to appear. Add any additional notes in the comment section at checkout.
Choose the width (16" or 20" wide).
Choose the thickness (1 1/4", 1 1/2", 1 3/4"). Generally if it'll be sitting on a counter most of the time, feel free to go thicker (the added heft really looks great), if more likely to spend more time on the wall, go a bit thinner.
Need an au jus groove to catch those juices? Select it from the drop-down, otherwise we'd say skip it if will be used more for vegetables - it makes it harder to get your mirepoix off the board.
Each cutting board is custom made, and we generally do these boards near the end of the month in one large batch, so the lead time can be up to about 4 weeks. If need it faster, let us know & we'll do our best to accommodate.
