treeHouse Window Planters

Most apartments aren't measured by the acre and don't come with lawns. That's the unfortunate reality. And if you bring in 250 yards of soil to turn your apartment floor into a garden, the landlord will be pissed. You are not DIA.

So what to do?

Get one of our treeHouse Window Planters and get growing in your windows.

Give yourself privacy while letting in some light with a stack of living curtains, or add one to your kitchen for all your herbs.

These planters consist of a beautiful custom hardwood faceplate that attaches to a plywood container (with a plastic lining). It's something you want to live with and something your guests will want to touch.

Through Sunday, August 3rd, get your own custom-sized planter (up to 36" wide) and custom wooden faceplate for $148. This is our beta test. These are new, and we need to see what people want. Going forward they'll be a bit less custom and cost a bit more.

All orders received by August 3rd will be completed by August 16th. If you're in or around Brooklyn, we can coordinate a pick-up or hand-off. As these are a bit larger, they are not eligible for free shipping. If you would like it shipped, choose "Planters" from the options. There will be no charge at checkout, but there will be an additional charge depending on the final size of the piece and the destination.

Here's what you get:

  • 3/8" thick custom Baltic birch enclosure - we line this with two layers of contractor's plastic and seal it with tape. It's not stained or treated, but you're welcome to do so, however most of this box will not be visible.
  • Hardwood Faceplate - choose your background wood (walnut, maple, or cherry) and if you would like another one for a contrasting stripe or two. We finish it with two coats of Danish oil, and then rub it out with steel wool and paste wax. Smooth as can be, and a semi-gloss finish. It clicks into place on the box using two screws and keyhole hangers.
  • Mounting hardware - we use "L" brackets. Everyone's windows are different. We thought about creating a more sophisticated bracket, but not worth it. These get it done and make it easy. Why make it complicated?
  • Styrofoam and landscaping fabric - the boxes are sealed, so you should put the Styrofoam at the bottom, fabric on top, then add the soil and plants - the space at the bottom allows for drainage and keeps the plants happy.

Outside dims of the box: 4 1/4" W x 5 3/4" H x custom length

Inside dims of the box: 3 1/2" W x 4 3/4" H x custom length

Dims of the faceplate: 6 1/2" H x 5/8" thick x custom length

What you need to do:

Choose the woods for the faceplate. Walnut is the dark brown, cherry is reddish and gets darker with time, and maple is the lightest.

Measure the narrowest space in your window frame - e.g. if there's some weird molding, measure between that - let us know the shortest distance.

We'll then be in touch regarding some final details.

All you need to add are soil and plants.
